Brown Belt Outline - (1st kyu)

Brown belt is the first of the full instructor grades (acting primary). The level of confidence and skill of technique are essential, as is the experience of instructing others in the art of Jiu Jitsu.


  • Attendance of a club instructor course
  • Attendance of a first aid course
  • An ability to do all techniques on the syllabus
  • An awareness of one's own self defence ability (including limitations)
  • Appropriate response under pressure by controlling physio-psycho-emotional response to violence


  • Assisted cutaway from Tomoe Nage with tori keeping hold of uke


  • Harai Tsuri Komi Ashi
  • Hiza Garuma
  • Kata Garuma
  • O Soto Garuma
  • O Tsuri Komi Goshi
  • Sasae Tsuri Komi Ashi
  • Sukui Nage
  • Sumi Gaeshi


  • Full knowledge of Nage No Kata with full practical application
  • Defence against any weapon - including improvised weapons (e.g. chair)
  • Defence against stalking attackers
  • Defence against stabbing bokken attacks
  • Defence against attacks at close quarters
  • Defence against two armed (non-sharps only) attackers
  • Defence against a boxer/kick boxer
  • Knowledge of Judo competition rules
