Black Belt Outline - (Dan).
It takes many years to become a black belt in Jiu Jitsu and its here that the learning really begins. The Dan syllabi are harder to quantify as it does not really rely on the capability of performing particular techniques, but rather how the techniques are applied, and the general presence and demeanour of the jitsuka.
Shodan (1st Dan)
- Defence against a gun
- Defence against a sharp weapon
Nidan (2nd Dan)
- Strong style
- Mastery of controlling/leading one's own environment
- Mastery of techniques
- Coping with unknown/unpredictable situations
Sandan (3rd Dan)
- Controlling unknown/unpredictable situations
